Hello! My name is David Hersman. I have been in school most of my life, first as a student, then for more than 30 years as an educator, both in the United States, and as a missionary in Papua New Guinea.

My wife, Crystal and I, have been married since 1969. Four children were born to us, and we adopted two others. We have also had two foster daughters from Papua New Guinea. The youngest one, Rachel, is our only child still at home.

One of our sons is a West Virginia State Police. Earlier when he was a deputy sheriff in our county, a motorist drew a gun, and shot him through the shoulder, his left lung, and the bullet lodged against his sternum (breast bone), only a half inch from his heart.

Thankfully, he recovered. While he was in the hospital, he received a tremendous number of visitors and cards from the people of Greenbrier County, including other law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and even so-called “public defenders.”

One of these lawyers wrote in his card, “Nathan, if there is anything we can do for you, just let us know. We’ll give you anything you want – except convictions!”

I guess I had been somewhat naïve, always believing that in the court room, there was at least a pretense that everyone involved was seeking the truth. Even though I knew there were lots of crooked lawyers, I thought they would at least act out a charade that they were seeking the truth.

However, after reading that comment by a public defender, talking to other lawyers, and a friend who is a prosecutor, I found out that, many (probably most) such criminal lawyers, believe that their job is the get the defendant acquitted – whether he is guilty of not! TRUTH has nothing to do with it! They are warped into believing they should persuade the jury to turn the criminal loose upon the society – even if they know he is a dangerous criminal.

But just as alarming as this lack of regard for TRUTH in the courtroom, is the widespread, nearly universally accepted, and sometimes legally mandated disregard for truth in the classroom.

Through years of experience and observation, I am convinced that many of our social, economic, and even political problems are due largely to the fact that TRUTH is no longer held in high regard in the average classroom. Even the criminal injustice problem described above is largely the fruit of the an educational system which no longer believes in absolute TRUTH, nor any absolute source of truth. Almost everything – even truth – has become relative.

In our concepts of virtual reality, we’ve accepted “virtual truth.” Our culture, for the most part, believes in “relative honesty.”

This TRUTH in EDUCATION web sight is geared to helping to provide thought provoking material regarding the importance on teaching the truth in all subject content, and the negative impact we are having if we neglect the TRUTH.

David H. Hersman, D.Min.
